My Hero Project Wrap-up

This is just a reminder that we will be wrapping up our My Hero research projects next week. You should have your written draft and your online typed paper ready for peer review next Wednesday (December 12th). You will be submitting your handwritten copy and your printed online paper together on Thursday, December 13th. As a class we will be submitting our research papers for review by the My Hero organization for possible online publishing.

I'm excited to see your final products. Remember, your research paper needs to be a minimum of 5 paragraphs in length. You will also need a picture of your hero to upload to your paper. If your hero is a family member, you will need to either upload a digital picture of them or bring in a picture for scanning.

Because a few of the students in our class our doing research papers on Bethany Hamilton, I thought you might enjoy watching the following trailer from a documentary about her life. Take a look at this video before you continue on today with your papers. Click on the Link Below.

Never Get the Flu, If You Can Help It........

Hey class!
As you know by now, I won't be in class today. I came down with what seems like the flu last night. If you were wondering what the picture is all about, those are influenza virus cells. Yuck!! My suggestion to you is to never get the flu, if you can help it! :)

You are obviously going to have a sub today. I need you to be on your absolutely best behavior. Demonstrate yourselves as the leaders that you are. I will follow-up with the sub to see how you did.

As for Language today, those who were scheduled to do their book reports will be delayed by at least 1 day. Be prepared to go as early as tomorrow. Hopefully most of the computers are working for you. A few of you will have to be doubled up on the computers. Follow the instructions on this page as closely as you can, and have a good time learning. You will not be working on your My Hero projects today. We will hopefully do that tomorrow.

STEP 1 My Hero Online Scavenger Hunt

Write down these questions on a sheet of paper (You will be turning this in): Make sure your name, date, and roster number are on this paper.

#1 Where was George Washington born, and on what date?

#2 During the French and Indian War, Washington set up a fort called.....

#3 In what year was Washington unanimously voted as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army?

#4 What was the final battle of the American Revolution that George Washington fought in?

#5 What did he do to try to rally his troops during this battle?

#6 Washington claimed to be invulnerable to what?

Click on this link to read about Washington and answer the above questions: http://www.myhero.com/myhero/hero.asp?hero=gwashington

After you are done, turn in your laptop and grab your Language books. You will be reading a story titled "Sweeping Pittsburgh Clean." Your teacher will have the page numbers for that story.

As you are reading, I want you to make entries into the "Guided Reading" section of your reading workshop journal. Use at least 4 different comprehension strategies (i.e., Asking Questions, Making Connections, Summarizing, Visualizing, etc...)

If you are done early, grab your independent reading book and read that silently and make journal entries as you do.

Your teacher today will have directions regarding the rest of today.

Have a great day! Hopefully I will see you tomorrow

HELENA, Will you make sure that all the computers get put away today? Make sure that they are all plugged back in at the end of class. Mr. Osbourne's class needs them at 10:00. Thanks!

My Hero Project

Hola Class!
(In-class Lesson for Wednesday, November 7, 2007)

STEP 1:
Before you do anything else today, we are going to logon to the following website and each create an individual account for the "My Hero" website. www.myhero.com/myhero/go/create/register.asp

Once you get to this site, wait for Mr. Burson's instructions on what to do.

STEP 2:
After we each set up an individual "My Hero" account, we are going to all go on an online scavenger hunt to find specific information about one of the heroes who we can research at the "My Hero" website. Answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper. Make sure to put a proper heading on your paper. You will need to title your paper "My Hero Scavenger Hunt #1". Also make sure to put your roster number and the date on your paper. After you complete this scavenger hunt and find the following information and have recorded your answers onto your paper, turn in your paper to the "red basket" and then follow the next set of directions on this blog page.

Online Scavenger Hunt
Go to the following location http://www.myhero.com/myhero/hero.asp?hero=einstein
and answer these questions:

#1 When Albert Einstein was 4 years old and sick in bed, what item did his father give him?
#2 What instrument did Albert Einstein play?
#3 How old was Einstein when he studied physics at the university level?
#4 In the second letter that Einstein sent to President Roosevelt in 1945, what did he say?

After you have answered all the questions to the scavenger hunt above, you may follow the directions below:

Today in Language class we will be continuing our work on our "My Hero" projects.
I want you to make sure to read through the following information and follow each of the directions given. We will each be writing a 5-paragraph essay on our heroes that we choose. In order to start this process, you must choose your hero that you will be researching. You can continue your research on your hero at the following sites:

http://www.myhero.com/

http://www.ajkids.com/

After you have selected your hero, you must begin planning out your essay. This is the general guideline for the structure of your essay:

Paragraph One: This paragraph should be a short introduction to your writing. Look at the following introductions in these examples: Christopher Reeve Rosa Parks Note: You may want to begin your writing by reflecting on some of the heroic qualities (courage, faith, perseverance, hope, humor, adaptability, and/or moral direction) shown by your hero.

Paragraphs Two, Three, and Four: In these paragraphs, you will be discussing your hero in detail. Summarize your hero’s story giving specific details: Who is your hero? Where does your hero live? When did your hero live (if applicable)? How did this hero make a difference? Give any other information you feel necessary to give the reader enough information to understand who this person is and what exactly this person did to be considered a hero. Be sure not to plagiarize. Summarize in your own words.
Paragraph Five: In this paragraph you will wrap things up. Oftentimes, good writers will refer back to their introduction when creating a conclusion. This way, their writing comes full circle. Take a look at some good examples in the “Directory” if you are having trouble.
Add Finishing Touches:
(a) Add at least one image related to your hero.--If it is a family member or someone who you do not have a digital image of, you will need to either scan the picture to upload it or bring your picture in to have it scanned by Mr. B.
(b) Add your credits.
(c) Add at least one link related to your hero.
(d) Add your bibliography.

I look forward to seeing your work on this project.

Mr. Burson

Welcome!

  • Welcome to the blog page for the 6th grade class for Inland Leader's Charter School!

This blog page will be a means by which we can update you on a variety of things going on in our class.

Today we had a great discussion in Language class about heroes. This discussion was timely, as we have been inundated with reports about the heroic efforts of local firefighters protecting homes in the nearby mountain towns of Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs during these recent fires in California. Jake Sandberg's dad, a local firefighter, had his picture taken while fighting these recent mountain fires, and the picture was picked up by Time Magazine. Mr. Sandberg was put on the front cover of the November issue of Time! I placed the cover picture on this blog page.

As part of this discussion today, we wrote our thoughts about heroes and several students had an opportunity to share who they consider heroes. We also watched a brief video about the life of Nick Vujicic. Nick has no arms or legs, but has an awesome outlook on life and is carrying a message of hope all around the world.

Each of you will be submitting a research paper about a hero that you select and publishing it at the http://www.myhero.com/ website. This is going to be a great project for this class and for each of you individually!

The links below will be a part of our continuing lesson on heroes:
  • http://www.myhero.com/ (use to research about heros and use to organize & publish your report)
  • http://www.ajkids.com/ (search engine for your hero research)

I look forward to having you visit regularly to check out the most recent updates and additions to this page!

Mr. Burson
